Icelandic Sheep

Icelandic sheep are some of the most useful critters around. They are a triple purpose sheep which can provide meat, milk and fiber. They are a landrace breed introduce to Iceland by the Vikings in the ninth or tenth centry. They are hardy, good mothers, proficient foragers and thrive in our U.P. environment.

We breed first and foremost for health and hardiness in our environment. Our sheep graze the woods, establishing silvopasture and besides high-quality minerals, they require little additional supplementation.

All culls are processed on-farm giving us an intimate perspective on meat quantity and quality. I am also an avid handspinner, which provides valuable insights into fiber quality. I have experimented some with dairying my sheep, but not enough to have strong preferences in my breeding stock.

I maintain a small flock of sheep and, at this stage, tend to maintain all individuals worth keeping. However, if you are interested in breeding stock well-adapted to mild, wet and snowy climates with sub-optimal forage quality, you are welcome to reach out. Lambs are born in April and May, evaluated all summer for health, hardiness and growth rate and available to take home early fall.
